Bega Tour With Willoughby Squash Club And The East Coast Squash Academy:

30/11/2014

On Friday the 10th of October East Coast Squash Academy hired a 12 seater van, with a group of members from Willoughby Squash Club and Bondi Waverley on a road trip down to Bega, for the  Bega Open Squash Championships.  Leaving mid-afternoon we had a couple of delays with traffic and pickups arriving after 10pm into the beautiful Tathra Beach House Apartments.

After a good night’s sleep and feeling a little dusty from the journey down, the group arose amped up to play. We arrived at the club and were treated like gold the moment we walked in the door. Having no idea about any of the draws, as we were only given match times, we soon found all a players ranging from divisions Open to C grade.

The Sydneysiders had great success taking out the Men’s Open (Aaron Frankcomb), runner’s up in the Women's Open (Moana Gray), third place in the Women’s open (Tiffany Hau all the way from USA from Middlebury College - Squash team), third place in the men’s state grade (Leif Watkin), Runner-up in the A grade (Danny Joukhadar), Runner-up in the C grade (Michael Mazzone). Both Raymond Riccardi and Nick Fletcher also had great runs in the State grade having the opportunity to play some different faces and gain some valuable experience.

The hospitality from Bega Squash club was an unforgettable experience. A lot of our guys and girls have not been to a country event before and it opened up their eyes to how fun country events are.  Across the weekend they let us hit on the golf driving range, helped us with transport, had an amazing Saturday night dinner dance and not to mention the smooth sailing of the tournament all weekend allowing us to get away early on Sunday to arrive back in Sydney at a decent time.

A big THANK-YOU goes out to Troy, Dennis and John the major sponsors for the event, our group had a ball.  The whole group was sure they will be back again next year.  Not to mention a big thank you for our Eski full of BEGA CHEESE!!!!!

Bondi Waverley Squash Club Signs Up To Join The East Coast Squash Academy

Bondi, NSW, Australia (19, November, 2014) – Bondi Waverley Squash Club has signed up to become the second facility for the East Coast Squash Academy in Sydney, Australia. A complete schedule of coaching clinics, tournaments and activities will be led by a top 100 profession squash player who will become the resident squash pro.

“We looked at several options and chose The East Coast Squash Academy because it met our social/community, financial and elite sport performance goals with the most attractive value proposition” explains BWSC Club President, Steve Greig. “One of the key factors to go ahead was the fact that this was a working model just across town, at Willoughby Squash Club.”

Amongst the objectives Bondi set forth when signing up was to promote and expand the sport of squash across the seaside community, especially for young players with the development of a junior program for boys and girls that accommodates all levels of play, not just the elite. With the signing of this landmark agreement, activities will launch early in the new year with several “kick off” events that will attract attention to this exciting new collaboration.

‘We’re thrilled to have Bondi join the Academy” declares Aaron Frankcomb, the Academy’s founder and Managing Director. “Bondi boasts an outstanding reputation within the local squash community. The club has a buzz to it, being in a vibrant part of town in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. We’re going to capitalise on that goodwill to create a fun and exciting environment for squash players of all standards with innovative competitions, clinics and activities.”

The East Coast Squash Academy is a value-add to existing squash clubs generating additional revenue by leveraging off-peak time slots whilst promoting the sport of squash in an variety of innovative ways. The numerous benefits for the hosting squash facility include: Increased use of the facility, more members, higher revenues, longer tenure of members, greater exposure and visibility within the sports and social communities as well as improved health and wellbeing for participants of all ages. Even though elite performance is at the core of the Academy’s curriculum, after-school and multi-sport programs are an integral part of the offering and cater to participants of all skill levels from young boys and girls to mature seniors who play competitively at the Masters level (35 to 80+ years of age).

Willoughby Squash Club hosted the first Doubles Squash Championships last Saturday with over 70 individual entries and 35 teams.  Wow what a turn out!

Our event attracted previous and current Commonwealth Games representatives Matthew Karwalski, Michelle Martin and Aaron Frankcomb.  With 6 divisions ranging from the Family Cup to Open events.   All participants came together and made the day a great success!

It was fantastic to see the families coming together, playing as a team and building a connection through squash.  We had new players come in for the event not even knowing who their partners were and by the end getting on a like a house on fire. It was truly great to see......

Thank you to all the Newcastle group for traveling down and taking out our A graders - Marty Bell and Shannon Bossard. And also to Matthew Karwalski and Bonnie Wu for your efforts, I hope you enjoyed the dinner with our crew and they didn't lead you astray too bad.  Matthew thank you for being open to making yourself available to play with our true blue Willoughby's great local member Raymond Riccardi, it was great to see you both hanging off one another's hip all day.......

After  working hard at building junior development in the Willoughby - North Shore & Sydney areas for the past 2 years, I am proud to have achieved the highest contingent of players on the NSW Junior Ranking list.

In my view, it is still very early days but it’s great to see our young junior players coming through the rankings so successfully.

At the East Coast Squash Academy we are building awareness of squash to a new generation of players in our local community that now totals over 500 children per week!

We run 28 junior programs a week during the school terms. Also, during school holidays, we run Good Sports Holiday Camps and Squash Camps.

Our Programs Include:

-        High School – School Sport
-        Primary School – School Sport
-        Active After Schools Squash Programs
-        Groups of 3 and 4 coaching
-        Individual Coaching
-        Beginner Group Training Squads
-        Internal Junior Competition
-        External Junior Competition
-        2-5 day Squash Camps
-        Good Sports Holiday Camps
-        Junior Tournaments

These programs would not be possible without our faculty so a big thank you goes out to our team:

Michelle Martin, Moana Gray, Dominic Benacquista, Darcy Evans, Dominique Ratcliffe, Jake Ebeid, Hannah Bulie, Claire Johnson, Ben Porgess and our resident mental toughness specialist Dr Marc Dussault.
