AUSTRALIAN SQUASH CREATES A BUZZ IN NEW YORK CITY

31/1/2016

Sydney, NSW, Australia (29, January, 2016) – Believe it or not, Australian Squash Clubs are thriving. The East Coast Squash Academy’s founder and managing director Aaron Frankcomb recently attended the Tournament Of Champions in Grand Central Station in New York City and was pleasantly surprised by the positive buzz about Australian squash.

“The pros on tour as well as recent retirees from the professional circuit have been excited about what’s happening in Australia” exclaims Frankcomb. “We’ve seen a surge in the number of applications from all over the world for positions available with the Academy, but the buzz goes beyond that.” Frankcomb explains, “Pro players, coaches and aspiring future champions see the grass-roots enthusiasm of the Sydney/Australian community on social media and online squash discussion boards.”

Admittedly, this feedback was bolstered by the large Australian contingency of attendees at the TOC in New York from Sydney’s Willoughby and Bondi Waverley Squash Clubs – 13 people travelled to the event as part of the Academy’s International initiative to expose local players to the global squash “scene”.

“We endeavour to strengthen the squash community by organising the opportunity for junior and senior members to travel and compete in both local and international squash events” Frankcomb states. “Successful trips have included The Bega Open (NSW), The City of Clarence Open (TAS), The Australian Open (VIC) and recently The Tournament of Champions in New York.”

Fuelling this buzz was the announcement that the East Coast Squash Academy secured former World #3, Madeline Perry, as the Academy’s Head Professional.

Perry joins the Academy after playing full-time on the WSA/PSA tour for the past 17 years. Perry represented Ireland in 5 Commonwealth Games and is the most successful squash player in history of Ireland Squash. She has won 13 World Tour Titles and was ranked within the top 10 WSA players for over 10 consecutive years. Perry retired from the professional world tour in the middle of 2015.

Sydney squash has been very dynamic over the past few years but it’s in large part due to strong advocates of the sport.  “Peter Aitken’s tireless enthusiasm and promotion of squash at the social, pennant and tournament levels at Willoughby Squash Club has contributed to the foundation of Sydney squash for the past decade. The Academy would not be here today without his support and dedication to the local and national squash community" states Frankcomb.

“The positive support for what we’re doing is amazing. We’re getting emails from parents, kids and adults of all ages who feel the resurgence of the sport, confirming that the momentum is building as well as player (ranking) results improving” adds Aitken. “Aaron’s love and passion for the game has clearly contributed towards the growth and success of the Willoughby Squash Club community. I believe he has affected positive change to the development of squash and I am excited to see this continual growth for the sport we all are so passionate about.”

The East Coast Squash Academy:

Founded in 2011 when Aaron Frankcomb retired from the Professional Squash Tour, the East Coast Squash Academy set out to create a business model to expand the presence of squash within local communities surrounding squash centres. The first installation was at Willoughby Squash Club where Frankcomb was hired as the club’s resident squash pro.

Since inception, the Academy has produced some stellar results including: Attracting a handful of junior players with aspirations of going on the professional (PSA) tour. Its junior program has the biggest contingent of players on the NSW Squash Junior ranking list, with players on the NSW junior state teams, Australian junior teams and Australian senior players. The Academy has developed NSW and Australian Junior Champions.

The Academy is home base to two full time senior players that have reached careers highs of top 240 in the world on the Men’s PSA Tour.  Its best female professional reached a top world ranking  of 130.

The junior program now boasts over 500 children participating in weekly squads and training sessions. Memberships and participation in squads have increased by 100% and 300% respectively and tournament registrations are at an all-time high.

The Bondi Waverley Squash Club is the second squash club to join the Academy, in 2014.

Shehana on the Oceania Jr Championships 2016

28/1/2016

One of our elite juniors, Shehana Vithana (16 y.o., Marist) participated in the Oceania Junior Championships earlier this month. She has some wonderful thoughts and memories about her amazing experiences with players from Australia, NZ, and Malaysia! Don't forget to check out some awesome photos at the end as well.

"The Oceania Junior Championships 2016 which commenced on the 15th of January on the Gold Coast of Queensland attracted close to 200 players from around Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia.

The first day took longer than anticipated as the humid atmosphere lengthened rally after rally. I won my first u17 girls match against Western Australia's Kiara Rodgers 3-0, which saw me match up with New Zealand's Zoe Dykzeul. Zoe was just too good on the day and took me out in 3. Next I played a second Kiwi - Ruby Turnbull and went down in an excruciatingly close 5 games. In the playoff for 7th place, I went up against Queensland's very own Taylor Jones and won in four games.
The u17 girls final was no upset as no.1 seed Wen Li Lai saw off no.2 seed Nadia Hubbard in 3 to clinch the title.

That very evening, the Australian junior team along with coaches Vicky Cardwell, Tim Cowell and team manager Lisa Camilleri, prepared for the Trans tasman test series commencing the next day -  checking into the team accommodation, tending to sore bodies and deciding on a name for the team's mascot.
The following morning, the team buzzed with nervous energy and excitement in anticipation of the long day ahead. The u13 boys and girls kicked us off with well earned wins, the u17 girls team fought hard but lost to our opponents and the day ended with a draw of 9 matches all and New Zealand leading by 3 games. A recovery session and fitful sleep later, the team was back the next day and more determined than ever. I played the no.1 seed Nadia Hubbard and went down in an extremely close 5 games, a huge improvement from last year. After many hard fought matches, New Zealand outdid the Australian team by 19 matches to 17.

Considering last years disheartening match score comparison, this years result is an enormous  improvement for our team and just goes to show that working as a team and giving it all we've got only gets you closer to victory.

It was an unforgettable trip and a great experience, and I look forward to seeing everyone again at the Australian Junior Open held in Tasmania this year!"

Sydney, NSW, Australia (19, January, 2016) – The East Coast Squash Academy is proud to announce and welcome Former World #3, Madeline Perry, as the Academy’s Head Professional. Perry will be responsible for managing and coaching a variety of programs at both Willoughby Squash Club and Bondi Waverley Squash Club.

"I am really excited to be joining the East Coast Squash Academy’s coaching team” Perry exclaims. “Having recently retired from the world tour, coaching will be a new and exciting challenge for me. Australia has always been a big influence within the squash world and it will be great to be a part of it."

Aaron Frankcomb, Director of The East Coast Squash Academy is also very excited to welcome Perry to the Academy. “We are thrilled to have such a great player like Madeline, join our team. This will be a great opportunity for our juniors, members and master players to gain outstanding guidance from such an experienced and accomplished player.”

The East Coast Squash Academy aims to consistently provide professional, world-class squash coaching, whilst also offer job opportunities for top players coming off the tour. “We are proud to offer coaching roles to retiring world class players, encouraging them to settle in Australia to strengthen the game of squash here,” Frankcomb adds. “This opportunity places Sydney and Australia in a great position to increase the standard and exposure to our junior, elite and professional players who are training to one day go on the professional playing circuit. We also hope this will continue to increase female participation within the sport.”

Frankcomb also believes it is important to have professional coaches inside clubs building coaching programs and competition. “For squash clubs to succeed, they need to expand the pool of players by providing  children and adults a wider range of opportunities within a variety of programs matched to age and level of proficiency. This is why we seek out masters of the game like Madeline to attract the most keen squash players of both genders and all ages. Everyone wants to get close to a world-class champion!”

Is Squash the secret to achieving your New Year's Resolutions?

6/1/2016

Often, people choose getting in that extra muscle tone or losing that little bit of body weight as their New Year's Resolution. Good News: Squash is one of the highest recommended ways of sticking to that resolution. 2016 could be the year you actually follow through with a resolution the whole way through, and it could be playing squash!

CBS news recently published an article recommending the best ways to stick with the plan to shed those extra pounds or get in that fitness shape you always wanted to be in, and squash is one of those suggested ways. Just 75 minutes of vigorous activity, the category in which squash is labeled, per day is enough to get you where you want to be. A standard lesson with one of our pros can take up anywhere from half to 60 of your 75 necessary minutes to live a healthier life. Even better, our advanced and beginner squads are the perfect way to fill up that time and also create a social atmosphere for you to meet other players of your standard.

Take a look at our bookings page to get started today! To read the full article, click here.
