Saturday 22nd Oct was World Squash Day! We had an open day at both of our locations, Willoughby and Bondi Waverley Squash Clubs! There were coaches at both locations providing free hits and tips, as well as open courts, free use of equipment, BBQ, coupons, face-painting and tattoos. We had signs to honk for squash and our junior development team was able to get 101 honks in under an hour and a half! We were really feeling the love and support from the community. At Willoughby, there was even a jar filled with squash balls. The person who guessed the correct number inside of the jar won a free training squad. Over 60 people participated in guessing the number of squash balls and the guesses ranged from 28 to 214. Several people were close and there were many who were just one squash ball off from the actual number. We want to congratulate Ivan Patchett on guessing the correct number of 85 squash balls inside of the jar! Following World Squash Day, we had the Return Leg of the M40 Cup Challenge between Bondi Waverley and Willoughby. This time, the event was hosted by Willoughby. (See recap of first M40 Challenge Here) There were 26 matches (52 participants!) between players of all standards. We even had several of our junior development athletes join in! It was a timed format so players played three 8-minute games of cumulative scoring. Everyone was trying to win as many points as possible for their teams to come out victorious! Willoughby players sported a bright orange tee while the Bondi players wore a spunky purple. Following the members matches, Aaron Frankcomb and Matthew Karwalski put on an awesome exhibition styled match for everyone before we had a delicious Oktoberfest themed dinner of slow-cooked sausages, sauerkraut, pasta salad and more. The entire night's drinks were sponsored by our friends at Young Henry's and everybody enjoyed the Real Ale and Newtowner all night long.
In the end, Bondi Waverley reigned supreme again, winning by a mere 12 points, even though Willoughby won the number of matches. The friendly but competitive matches between the two clubs has created an awesome relationship and grown the network of squash players in the Sydney area. Preparations at both Bondi Waverley and Willoughby Squash Clubs are underway for World Squash Day on October 22nd, 2016. This event is held every year at squash centres around the world to celebrate the sport we all love to play! It is a completely free event, so bring down family and friends to learn a new sport and expose them to the great athleticism and technique required to play squash. Do you know how World Squash Day started? It began in New York City in the USA, in honor of a squash player who was killed in the 9/11 attacks in 2001. The first World Squash Day was held in England and has since spread. You can also visit their site to learn more. In addition to free coaching for adults and children, we will have facepainting, a barbecue, hot shots, blow-up squash outside, and other fun games and events throughout the day. Prizes will be up for grabs alongside the wonderful food and fun with our coaching staff! Both centres will have free admission from 10am to 4pm on Saturday Oct 22nd. Come on in, sign in with the desk staff, and then join in the fun! We look forward to seeing you at one of the clubs! The internal Xpoint Teams Comp at Willoughby ended a few weeks ago. On grand final night, Team 6 played Team 2, each vying for the chance to win first place. In the end, it was a tight match, with Team 2, Jason Williamson, Greg Beeforth, and Amy Hannelly taking the championship 2-1. It was a good fight by Team 6, who still went home with some great prizes. Pictures from the final are below.
Thanks to everyone who played this comp and to all of our reserves! We will begin the next competition again soon and hope to see everyone again. Of course, we are always looking for more teams and players to join the competition so if you are interested in an internal comp, please e-mail Aaron Frankcomb today at [email protected] with your name and matrix (or level if you do not have one) and he will place you on a team for the next round. East Coast Squash Academy has sadly bid farewell to its first High Performance player and one of its original Assistant Professional team members, Darcy Evans. He has achieved top rankings in the state of NSW, has played premier league, for Willoughby's Sydney 1 Pennant Team, and is ranked #277 on PSA. Darcy has found an excellent opportunity to train in the United States under Rodney Martin, alongside some of the sport's current top players, including fellow Aussie player, Ryan Cuskelly. In his time with us, Darcy has coached some of our top juniors, given many adults and juniors private lessons, run round robins, and advised both beginner/intermediate and advanced training squads. In addition to be an invaluable member of the coaching team, he has been an excellent role model for our upcoming juniors, especially our Elite Development members and Junior Development members. His smiling face, great energy, and humour will be missed. We want to wish Darcy the best of luck in the future on the PSA tour and with training. We hope to see you back around Australia for tournaments or training soon!
