Super 7 Exhibition Recap!

10/8/2016

Last night, we had the FIRST Super 7 Exhibition at Willoughby Squash Club! In conjunction with Willoughby, Squash Mechanics, and Squash.com.au, we were able to secure Miguel Rodriguez (WR #5), Cameron Pilley (WR #14), and Ryan Cuskelly (WR #16) for the men, in addition to taking two players out of retirement, Aaron Frankcomb (Former WR #38) and Matthew Karwalski (Former WR #49). On the women's side, we were graced by Rachael Grinham (Former WR #1, current WR #20) and Madeline Perry (Former WR #3)!

For those who were unable to attend, the format of the Super 7 was as follows:

Women: Best of 3 games, each 7 minutes long.
Men: Round Robin style, each player plays against everyone else in 1 7-minute game, two highest play in the final 7minute game.

The night started with some wonderful introductions of our players and set the tone of the night. Steve Walton explained the interactive experience of the exhibition, and our crowd showed their players their appreciation. Then, we welcomed the women on court. In a tight first game, Rachael took the first game 13-11. The second game, Madeline felt the support of her home crowd and took that energy to win 12-8. Then, in the third deciding game, the women went back and forth, some beautiful shots were thrown in, but in the end, Rachael couldn't stop Madeline's momentum from game two and Mads finished strong with an 11-8 win.

Following the women's match, we enjoyed a beautiful dinner from the Sydney Cooking School and drinks from Young Henry's. A chandelier was brought in by Lights 2 You, while on the big screen, guests were able to watch Miguel's match versus Gaultier from two years ago.

After a tasty dinner (did you try the pulled pork??), the men began their sessions. We watched each of them take each other on, in high fashion with grueling points, dives, rolling nicks, and between-the-leg winners. Halfway through the round robin, we paused to watch Miguel take on Cameron in a first ever pinata smashing competition. They each had two shots to get a hole through the pinata, and Miguel landed a beauty just under the center.

Again, the men started up again, showing their great racquet skills and athleticism. We were privileged enough to see some awesome dives from Miguel, a frame-winner from Killer, some strategic time use from Mr. Frankcomb, unbelievable racquet head speed from Cameron, and multiple lefty nicks from Cusk. After the round robin finished up, each player selected a member of the crowd to join them in competing in Hot Shots. Each pair competed against each other to make it to round two, and then elimination until we had Willoughby Manager Peter Aitken and World #5 Miguel Rodriguez battling it out. In the end, Miguel won the Hot Shots title in addition to his pinata championships earlier in the evening.

Finally, we welcomed back to the court Miguel and Cameron for the final....where Pilley and Cuskelly ended up doing a tag team final 7 minutes. Cameron played the first half keeping a tight score with Miguel. Then Cuskelly came on and provided a whole different game to conclude the evening.

All in all, it was a wonderfully exciting evening full of cheeky grins, lots of attacking squash, fun competitions, and an engaged crowd. With nearly 90 guests, we had a totally packed grand stand! Thank you to all of our guests for coming and providing the spirit and energy! We are grateful to all of the players for showing us wonderful squash, Willoughby squash club for hosting, Sydney Cooking school for the food, Young Henry's for the drinks, squash.com.au for the gear and support, all of our members who have helped support our players, and our team for organizing this event.

We can't wait to do another one soon!

Way to go Super 7s!
