Sydney University has been proactively promoting squash within both the academic and local communities with a focus on grass roots efforts to introduce new people and students to the sport while also rekindling the passion within former players.
This has been possible with the partnership and collaboration of the East Coast Squash Academy, founded by professional squash player and former world #38 Aaron Frankcomb. “We are proud to have such a visionary collaborator in Sydney Uni” explains Frankcomb. “Programs and events like the one we just staged for Ultimate Edge Communications is the result of the on-going development of corporate events that cater to the athletic interests as well team building and professional development of employees.”
The corporate squash event begins with an explanation of the rules of squash followed by a high-speed exhibition match to demonstrate how elite make it look easy. With the basics of the game covered, team members then get on court and are fed balls to practice the basic strokes: The drive, volley and boast. Once minimum proficiency is established, a round-robin competition is staged for all team members to play each other to crown the corporate champion who’ll win bragging rights in the office for the next 12 months.
This year’s inaugural champion Evan Bohringer said “I haven’t been on a squash court in almost 10 years and this was a fun way to get back on court.” First-time squashie and winner of the best attitude award, Gemma Giam declared “What I like about squash is that we get to hit (or miss) a lot more balls, whereas with tennis for example, most of the time is lost picking up balls.”
The Academy stages a variety of corporate events for small teams, from a fun social afternoon to specific skill-based team building right up to the deliberate practice principles that uses squash as the metaphor for striving for excellence and success for the most committed teams.
If you’re looking for a fresh, new (different) reward, team-building or professional development program for your team, contact the Academy for all the details. The Academy can easily cater for groups of 6 to 30 across multiple locations throughout the Greater Sydney area.
